How Much Do You Know About Your Dreams?

Scientists aren’t exactly sure why we dream, but they’ve put forth many theories. Our nightly adventures may help us rehearse threatening situations, work through emotions and process information. But, for all of the unknowns, there is plenty that researchers do know — and some of it may surprise you.

" During REM sleep, the muscles in your arms and legs become temporarily paralyzed, so you don’t act out your dreams. But research shows that people dream in all sleep stages, Dr. Stickgold said. “We probably dream more in non-REM sleep in a given night than REM sleep,” he explained. “But our most intense and emotional and bizarre dreams occur during REM sleep.”"
