I have a smidgeon of Native blood in me. The family story is that a great great grandmother on my Father’s side was an Indian woman (we don’t know the tribe) who married a Welsh Coal miner who had immigrated to the Mid-west. We don’t know what tribe she is but a cousin who did geneological research found out that she had moved to Ohio from North Carolina, so possibly Cherokee. But my Native friends joke around about whites who say that their great, great grandmother was “a Cherokee Princess” so I don’t usually mention it to them.
Two summers ago my wife and I traveled through the Blackfoot Reservation in Montana and saw the Sweetgrass hills where they did vision questing. We also saw Blackfoot petroglyphs at “Writing on the Stone Provincial Park” in Alberta. That place looks like the Southwest sandstone desert! We even saw some cactus and rattlesnakes! Hard to believe you’re in Canada!

My wife has been very involved in Native studies. For years she worked with Native elders in preserving the Puget Sound Salish language and storytelling traditions. Because of this work, she was made an honorary member of the Upper Skagit Tribe. We have been invited to a lot of Native ceremonies, sweat lodge, pow wows, etc. She was also adopted by a Nuh-cha-nulth family from Vancouver Island, BC.

p.s. the Hopi (Arizona) say that “Spider Grandmother” is very wise. She hides in your hair and whispers wisdom in your ears.

Joe David is a Nuh-Cha-Nulth carver and artist from Vancouver Island, BC. He’s also my wife’s adopted brother.
His most famous piece may be this cedar man. He carved it based on a dream that he received and it had a lot to do with saving Meares Island in Clayoquat Sound from logging in the 80’s. He has also been a Sun Dancer under the tutelage of Wallace Black Elk (Lakota). He’s also a sweat lodge leader.

Dream your dreams into reality!

5 Lushootseed (Puget Sound Salish) elders share their stories and wisdom.
The first one is Vi Hilbert (Upper Skagit) who was my wife’s main teacher and adopted Mother.
She accompanied Vi on many of her story telling events and told stories with her, also helping her on projects to preserve the Lushootseed language and storytelling traditions.
We were at the event at the end of this video in 1985 at the Upper Skagit Tribe. My wife (Rebecca Chamberlain) studied with her at the University of Washington in the 80’s. Vi has now passed on into the Spirit World.

  • The painting depicts a group of Native Americans galloping towards the viewer from the desert flats. The landscape around them is a badlands of shimmering yellows. One of the warriors calls to the spirits as he awaits his fate.
  • The painting is an example of genre painting and is influenced by Impressionism. It is characterized by its loose brushwork and open composition
