“The Sol Niger of Nigredo” is a song by Nigredo that was released in 1993 on the album Thee Split Tape.
“Sol niger” is also an alchemical term that refers to the black sun, or the first stage of the nigredo, which is the alchemical process of blackness. The nigredo is a stage of decomposition or putrefaction, and is considered the first step in the process of creating the philosopher’s stone. Alchemists believed that all ingredients needed to be cleansed and cooked until they became a uniform black matter.
The nigredo is also a psychological state that represents the “dark night of the soul” when someone must confront their inner shadow. It is said to last for 40 days and 40 nights, which is the same amount of time Jesus spent in the desert.
