The Mul Mantra is a foundational Sikh mantra, often considered the root mantra of Sikhism. It is the opening verse of the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy scripture of Sikhism, and is attributed to Guru Nanak, the founder of the Sikh faith. The mantra encapsulates the core beliefs and essence of Sikh philosophy.
Gurmukhi:
ੴ ਸਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਅਜੂਨੀ ਸੈਭੰ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
Transliteration:
Ik Onkar, Sat Naam, Karta Purakh, Nirbhau, Nirvair, Akaal Moorat, Ajooni, Saibhang, Gur Prasad.
Translation and meaning:
- Ik Onkar: There is only one God.
- Sat Naam: His name is Truth.
- Karta Purakh: He is the Creator.
- Nirbhau: He is without fear.
- Nirvair: He is without hate.
- Akaal Moorat: He is beyond time (immortal).
- Ajooni: He is beyond birth and death.
- Saibhang: He is self-existent.
- Gur Prasad: He is realized by the grace of the Guru.

Wah! doing the Heart Sutra mantra. Beautiful! Notice the harmonic overtone singer making sweet tones overhead. I highly recommend her Savassana albums for mantra music. This is from Savassana 2 which is especially good.
