I believe he started it, got stuck, then Browne and Frey co-wrote and finished it. I was in Arizona when it came out (as did āGet Backā) and it was a big deal!
Iām not a āDeadheadā but there is one Grateful Dead song I really like because a close friend used to sing in when we were living in Nepal.
From the article: For centuries, meditators have been using songs to remind themselves of very important key points. This song is about life and death. Itās especially about how to use every situation and every experience to improve and liberate our minds: your normal everyday life, dream and deep sleep, the states of mind during meditation, the process of consciousness separating from the body, being face to face with unstructured reality as completely naked consciousness, and finally the process of seeking and choosing the best place of reincarnation, reconnecting with a body for rebirth. The seven verses deal with situations that we meet as human beings. This is true whether we are spiritual, religious, atheists or freethinkers.
The verses starts with ema which means, āwhoa, this is for real!ā
Feel free to chant along.
Another great version of āRippleā from the āPlaying for Changeā project. Some famous musicians (including the late great David Crosby) playing with musicians from all over the world (some of them well known and some are unknown street musicians) through the magic of multi-tracking. There are a bunch of Playing for Change videos on youtube and I also think there is a full length movie.
DJ Cheb i Sabbah was a French Jewish Algerian electronic DJ (one of the earliest ones, he was spinning tunes in Paris clubs in the 60ās) who did some great remixes of Indian and North African spiritual music. His album āDevotionā is one of my all time favs. He traveled around India and Pakistan recording Hindu and Sufi devotional music and then did this masterful remix.
Another 70s milestone, The Point. A 70 minute album/cartoon originally narrated by Ringo Starr, then Dustin Hoffman, then this version. The story, the music, the point of it all! Donāt expect anyone to go through it allābut itās absolutely worth it!
Aliceās Restaurant . . . . Arlo Guthrie, an 18 minute story/song that defies easy description except it reflected the experiences of a generation, my generation, in several ways. It was also a decent movie. I was drafted in the military in 1967 and went through an induction physical at the same place as Guthrie, and one of the guys on the Group W Bench in the movie was a kid who used to beat me up in Junior High School. Great album with terrific songs on the B side too.
Ah yes, John Lennonās old drinking buddy Harry Nilsson. Pointless yet very much to the Point,
. . . and Aliceās Restaurant which I remember learning how to fingerpick on guitar as a teenager. I turned 18 in '72. I was determined at all cost to avoid going to Vietnam. I was getting prepared to file a Conscientious Objector request, but was getting prepared to go to Canada, or even to jail if need be. They then started the lottery system for the draft based on your birthday. I lucked out, thank you Jesus & Buddha, so no longer had to worry about it. And continued on fingerpicking Aliceās Restaurant to this day . . . although my fingers are getting a bit rusty with some arthritis. This life is quite the wild dream ride!
And old Arlo is now a Third Order Franciscan Monk. They are a Franciscan Lay Order, i.e. you donāt need to be celibate and can live an ordinary life outside of a monastery but still engage in prayer, meditation and a life of service.
My favorite current female super-group, Starling Arrow consisting of Ayla Nereo, Leah Song and Chloe Smith of Rising Appalachia, Tina Malia and Marya Stark. Their first album was just released today and it is astounding. Sweet harmonies coupled with deep poetic lyrics.
You can name your own price to download the whole album or individual songs. You can also hear the album on Spotify and most of the songs are on youtube.
After I returned from my military career in Asia I taught at an alternative school in Texas, The New Age School for a few years. It helped me to start to get over my PTSD. One of my colleagues was a conscientious objector to the war and had convinced his draft board to let him do alternative service work for under $2k a year, and he worked there with me for those years. I respected his choice and we were good friends and housemates.
A few years ago I heard another version of Arloās āAā side where he talked about being invited to Jiminy Carterās inauguration, and at that inauguration, he was approached by Chirpy Carter who told him that they found a copy of Aliceās Restaurant in the White House music collection. Arlo then mused that his record was eighteen and a half minutes, while the famous gap in the Watergate tape was . . . . also eighteen and a half minutes long. He wasnāt saying it was, and he wasnāt saying it wasnāt . . . He was just there to sing his song.
I will say one positive from the movie is they kind of make reference to OBEs and creating a special dream body of consciousness. Allan Wallace mentions this briefly on page 110-111 of Dreaming Yourself Awake.
Original Star Trek TV Fan here. I have an ongoing friendly banter with a buddy about ST vs SW, all versions of it. The original Star Trek network broadcast show, the original moviesā2, 4, 6 and Galaxy Quest, along the most recent reboot first movie with Chris Pine are my turf. I disavow all the other Trek iterations except the new series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which is a throwback to the original and is quite good.
