I believe that the harmony singing in peyote songs is Primeaux and Mikeâs innovation. Traditionally they are sung without harmony. But itâs a beautiful innovation and an example of how musical traditions evolve. The drum that you hear is a water drum. It literally has water in it to tune it to a particular tone and the skin can be stretched as you play it to vary the tone, which you can hear if you listen for this,
âJesus Help Meâ by Primaux and Mike
We sing this in our sacred saunas, in the Lakota Tradition ![]()

@BlessingsDeers Iâve also been in Sweat Lodge ceremonies many times. Although in the American Indian traditions, sweat lodge songs are different than peyote ceremony songs. Although I have been in ceremonies where a sweat lodge was held immediately after a peyote ceremony.
we are a regular group with connections all over the world. I think we also sing the Peyote songs because we do it very often - this specific group that Iâm connected with meet twice a week in Sintra, and once a week in the South of Portugal! and have periods when they sing everyday in Lisbon for supporting shamanic healing. Itâs A LOT of singing, so thereâs basically songs from all ceremonies⊠also from the Sun Dance⊠some of them are intuitive, straight from the heart.
The Indian Shaker Church is a religion that started in 1910 near where I live in Olympia, Washington. Itâs a mix of Christianity and traditional Indian shamanism. It was founded by John and Mary Slocum and it was claimed that John Slocum had died and Mary brought him back to life with prayers, songs and a shaking kind of healing. It was said that John journeyed to heaven and brought back the teachings of the Indian Shaker Church (no connection to the early American Shaker religion). They do healing ceremonies using bells, candles and shamanic kinds of energy healing. The drum-like rhythm that you hear in their songs are the sound of their stomping feet on the wooden floor of the church as they ring their bells in time with the stomping. The Shaker Church has now spread throughout Indian communities in the Pacific Northwest from British Columbia down to Northern California.
this is AMAZING!
and very powerful.
Yes indeed. For many years the traditional Native shamanism was banned from being practiced, so it was only practiced in secret. But the Indian Shaker Church was allowed since it took the form of a Christian Church. The traditional Indian religions were allowed to be practiced again in the late 70âs by the Indian religious freedom restoration act. Ironic that America was founded on the idea of âfreedom of religionâ but for many years that didnât apply to Indians.
Phillip Glass and Ravi Shankar, from their album âPassages.â The whole album is amazing!
This band reminds me of Green Day.
Catchy hook:
âA voice called out,
The time has come,
Michael the Archangel,
Defend us in battle,
In this time of your arrival.â
Invoking the Archangels for Protection.
From Kate Bushâs full length musical from the early 90âs - âThe Red Shoes.â The whole thing is worth watching and is on youtube.
Mother of Light, purify me,
fill me with Love, purify me
Always walk, the walker walks
With the sun shining behind and before
And in the song that enchants the heights
My heart finds its cure
Cure, cure, cure, cure
Cure, cure, condorcito (little condor) cure me.
Mother of Light, accompany me,
fill me with peace, accompany me
Mother of Light, come show me,
fill me with love, come show me
Mother of Light, come remember me,
all one is, all one is
Always walk, the walker walks
With the sun shining behind and before
And in the song that enchants the heights
My heart finds its cure
Cure, cure, cure, cure
Cure, cure, condorcito cure
