Why hide from this love
if inside there is a pure flower?
And it heals me and cleanses me
And it calms me, reminds me
Why hide from this love
if inside there is a pure flower?
And it heals me and cleanses me
And it calms me, reminds me
Mantle of Light, river of love
Sweet treasure in the heart

Judee Sill may be the greatest musician of the 70âs that you never heard of. I came across her album âHeart Foodâ in a free used record bin as a college student and was blown away by lyrical poetic music infused with flavors of Christian Mysticism, and I played her album over and over. But no one seemed to know who she was. I looked for more albums and never found any. But now I know what happened. This documentalry movie was just released and itâs available on Apple, Amazon Prime and Youtube and it has finally solved the mystery of who this woman was:
This includes interviews by Jackson Browne, David Crosby, David Nash, JD Souther (whom she dated for a time) Linda Ronstadt and David Geffen (the founder of her record label). She was well known in the 70âs L.A. music scene and was the first artist signed to Asylum Records.
I never knew until now her full tragic tale. Judee survived a tragic childhood of abuse at the hands of her step-father and became a heroin addict. She lived on the street and out of a car for a time, got busted for robberies and learned to play gospel piano in the reform school church services. Then she somehow managed to get off drugs and make a minor name for herself in the L.A. music scene for a few years.
Her song, âThe Donorâ is is a work of pure genius. drawing on the âkyrie eleisonâ of the traditional Catholic mass and uses a full choir of voices. She says, âI hoped to write a song to induce God to give us all a breakâ:
âChase âem to the bottom
till Iâve finally caught âem
dreams fall deepâŠ
Songs from so deep
While Iâm sleepinâ
Seepinâ, sweepinâ over me.â
Did she get inspired to write songs from the dream realms? I wouldnât be surprised.
One person in the film described her music as âoccult, holy, western, baroque, jazz gospel.â Thatâs as good as a description as any. She stated that her main influences were âBach, Pythagoras and Ray Charles.â She says of this song: âI thought Iâd write a song to induce God to give us all a break!â
In âThe Kissâ you can hear the kind of erotic mysticism that one finds in many of the Christian mystics. Christ as mystical lover? This may be her most famous song:
"Heâs a bandit and a heartbreaker, but Jesus was a Crossmaker:
Judee, however, came to a sad end. She ended up in a car accident that led to surgery and chronic pain. Knowing her addiction history, her doctors refused to give her opioids. Her pain drove her back to illegal street drugs and she died of an OD in 1979. It was listed as a suicide but her friends feel that it was an accident. A sad, sad end to a brilliant creative genius!
âIâll tell you a secret, Iâve never revealed:
However we are is OK.â

âNearer My God to Theeâ -Mississippi John Hurt. A great early 2Oth Century Country Bluesman, who got rediscovered during the 60âs folk revival.
âYet in my dreams Iâd be, nearer my God to Thee, nearer to thee.â
More from Mississippi John, âSince Iâve Laid My Burden Downâ
The Blind Reverend Gary Davis was discovered by the folkies singing on the streets of Harlem and became well known in the folk music scene during the 60âs.
âJust as long as Iâm in this world,
I am the Light of this world.â
Hereâs a great version by Jorma Kaukonen of Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna fame:
@NightHawk999 I love Rising Appalachia! I got to see them perform a couple of times. Their parents (theyâre sisters) were folkies who were into old-time Appalachian music and raised them in hills of Northern Georgia.
âLean into the river.â
During the pandemic lockdown period, Leah and Chloe of Rising Appalachia met on Zoom to write songs with Ayla Nereo, Tina Malia and Marya Stark. They then decided to perform these songs as âStarling Arrow.â
Hereâs a live performance:
Yes I think you have posted a few songs of them in the other thread, the Mississippi song of theirs is soooooooo good!
