John Newton
A Christian Milarepa, John Newton participated in the slave trade from a very early age and eventually became a captain of a slave ship. After he retired and was still financially invested in the trade, he had a spiritual conversion. He divested himself from profiting from the slave trade and became one of Britain’s leading abolitionist voices. He encouraged a despondent William Wilberforce, an MP in parliament who also had a spiritual conversion and wanted to quit, to stay in Parliament and “serve God where he was”. William Wilberforce was the leader behind the Parliamentary campaign to abolish the slave trade in the British Empire which lead to the passing of the Slave Trade Act of 1807 which completely prohibited the slave trade.
Of his time as a slave trader he wrote: “It will always be a subject of humiliating reflection to me, that I was once an active instrument in a business at which my heart now shudders.” He had immense faith however that God’s grace could save someone even like him. He wrote one of Christianity’s most beautiful hymns, “Amazing Grace.”

Corrie and Betsie Ten Boom and the Ten Boom family
Opened their homes up to shelter Jewish people during World War II. Connected with the Dutch Resistance, they were able to same many lives and smuggle many people to more safer places. Arrested for their activities, their father soon died in prison. The sisters Betsie and Corrie were sent to Ravensbrück concentration camp, where they organized worship services after the brutal forced labor of the day. They were known for their selfless giving and sharing of their meagre rations with their fellow inmates. Betsie died there. Before she died she told her sister “There is no pit so deep that God is not deeper still.”

Testament: The Story of Moses
Was talking with a friend the other day who told me something that made may ears pick up, they said Moses was able to talk to trees, is this true?
I could only find two passages in the bible of plants/trees speaking, one in Judges, the other when an angel (God?) talks through a burning bush.
Can you help me fact check my friends statement? Was he able to communicate with plants or trees, in other instances other than the burning bush?

Sorry I can’t help here. I’ve never heard this before. Maybe it’s a rabbinical midrash that arises in later literature, like the Talmud? Just guessing here, I don’t really know.
Communication with animals is a part of Christian tradition, such as St Francis preaching to the birds, or St Anthony preaching to fish. Never read anything about communicating with plants though. That sounds more like those religions with shamanist elements, such as many indigenous religions, Bon, and Shintoism. Communicating with plant spirits is very important in many of these religions.

This is the same friend who told me about Solomon doing this with animals, so it made me thgink he might have some credibility.
Not sure have not heard of this before, I have to do some research on it
