A new spin on an old hit:

I just saw “A Complete Unknown” and I highly recommend it, especially if you have any interest in the music and zeitgeist that changed the world in the 60’s. Timothee Chalamet’s portrayal of the young Bob Dylan is brilliant. He gets the character right and he even learned to play guitar and harmonica and to sing like Dylan. The film very accurately recreates the early 60’s Greenwich Village scene. We see a young Dylan landing in New York from Minnesota, meeting Woody Guthrie on his deathbed, becoming mentored by Pete Seeger and forming a relationship with Joan Baez both musically and romantically (Monaco Barbaro also learned how to sing and play guitar like Joan). Johnny Cash also makes an appearance as a film character. This all happens during the historical backdrop of the early 60’s Cuban missile crisis, Civil Rights movement and Kennedy assassination. We also see the controversy around Dylan “going electric” and the backlash this created at the Newport Folk Festival. This will be remembered as one of the great films of 2024.

Having hung around “The Village” in the '60s it has built-in nostalgia for a lot of us who did, along with a great catalog of songs. Not sure how younger generations will go for it, given evolving musical tastes, though the star is becoming the new Brad Pitt/Leonardo DiCappucino.

I remember seeing this in elementary school. Notice how “good” the science is:

I’ve been to Hiroshima. Nothing in the film would have been remotely helpful. No wonder we Boomers grew up paranoid!

One of the best movies of the 1960s, really worth watching: Flight of the Phoenix! The remake wasn’t bad but the original was much better.

Incomparable political thriller. Not the poor remake!
