Providing a second chance  :clap:

Bionic limbs are certainly on their way, in time they will probably be better than their human counterpart.

No more language barriers :metal:

Samsung Electronics is set to introduce a real-time call translation service using AI technology in their upcoming smartphone models. This feature, known as ā€˜AI Live Translate Call’, will be integrated into the native call feature of Samsung Galaxy phones, enabling real-time audio and text translation during phone calls. The service is designed to make conversing across languages as simple as turning on closed captions. This AI-powered feature is part of Samsung’s ā€˜Galaxy AI’ initiative, which aims to enhance everyday mobile experiences using artificial intelligence.

The ā€˜AI Live Translate Call’ feature will be available on the Samsung Galaxy S24 series, expected to be launched in January 2024. This feature will allow audio and text translations to be displayed in real-time during a phone call, processed entirely on the device 1 2 3 4 5

Now, just meaning barriers (aka, lost in translation).

Not for long, remember we are in the early stages of AI (this technology is only about a year old).

We are on the cusp of AGI and the singularity …

(A theoretical point in time when technological growth becomes uncontrollable and irreversible, resulting in unfathomable changes to human civilization. This concept is frequently associated with the idea that artificial intelligence will surpass human intelligence.)

Quantum computers and AGI + the singularity will really make things take a weird turn :+1:.

Makes you wonder about some of the civilizations that have made it past the great filter and have existed for billions of years .

Also, it was brought up recently on a podcast I linked so I feel a bit more comfortable talking about it outside of my own mind . Are computers an alien life form that humans don’t fully understand? It’s easy to pass them off as being unintelligent but they sure know how to produce an illusion of control and introduce themselves slowly to make big changes in a seemingly lost world.

All hail the silicon based life forms .

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Hope time spent with the family is enjoyable!

Well, there is THE VULCAN MIND MELD . . . . . .

Have to admit I needed to look it up lol.

ā€œThe Vulcan Mind Meld is a fictional concept from the ā€œStar Trekā€ universe. It is a technique used by Vulcans to share thoughts, experiences, memories, and knowledge through a direct mind-to-mind link. This is typically done by the Vulcan placing their hand on the target’s face and making a mental connection. The Mind Meld allows one individual to experience another’s thoughts and emotions, offering deep insight or understanding. It’s an iconic element of the ā€œStar Trekā€ series, often associated with the character Spock, a Vulcan. This concept is a creation of science fiction and does not have a basis in real-life science or psychology.ā€

I think there is some reality to this concept. It is from personal experiences when I was in a setting where my mind was highly receptive, I encountered what I believe was genuine thought transfer, not once, but twice. This phenomenon manifested when my thoughts were at their peak in clarity and intensity during a stay in a mental hospital. It wasn’t intentional, the person who shared this experience with me experienced a moderate mental break afterwards.

The following day, she told me she began hearing unusually clear voices in her mind, a new experience for her. Light-heartedly, I suggested it might be the work of aliens.

Returning to the concept of the mind meld, it’s worth considering that emerging technologies could eventually bridge the gap between science fiction and reality. Neuralink, for example, has recently received FDA approval to implant devices in human brains that interpret neural signals in real time and produce nearly instant responses. This was demonstrated when they showed their implant giving a monkey the ability to play a game of Pong using only its mind. Given these advancements, it’s not too far-fetched to envision a future where Neuralink devices, possibly equipped with Wi-Fi, could facilitate direct thought transfer between individuals in real time. An important step in opening minds to what is possible. Maybe one day, when minds have been opened enough through direct experience (this world loves the scientific method for some reason) the neuralinks can be removed completely :slightly_smiling_face:.

  1. FDA Clearance: On May 25, Neuralink announced it had received FDA clearance to start its first human clinical trials. This approval is crucial for progressing the company’s research and development in brain-implant technology [āž] [āž].

Raises a thought provoking question.

How challenging would it be for a Neuralink device to identify the specific brainwave frequencies associated with dreaming and transmit a simple cognitive prompt, such as ā€œI’m dreamingā€?

Pretty! From my understanding the duration of these videos are limited currently but it is a promising technology.

Hopefully soon we can write our own storyline to a movie, click generate then proceed to watch a freshly generated, one off movie. Incredible stuff on the horizon :slightly_smiling_face:!

I’m no expert on genetic engineering of bioweapons but I think that a racially based bioweapon would be pretty hard to do, as it’s hard to even define what ā€œraceā€ means in terms of genetics, even though we all recognize the superficial differences in racial appearance. The basic physiological mechanisms that keep us all alive are pretty identical across races, despite differences in skin tone, hair color, etc. Bioweapon research should be banned in my opinion. I don’t know if Covid was a lab leak but it very well could have been. And if it wasn’t, whose to say that there won’t be lab leaks of terrible pathogens in the future!
May all weapons of mass destruction, whether nuclear, biological or chemical be quickly eliminated from this planet. Whatever we do to our neighbors on this planet will blow back on us!

Not here to convince you of that. I will say though, history doesnt repeat itself, but it does rhyme:

Its my understanding that Asian genes prevent Asian couples from having redheads. Not sure if this is true, I learned if from South Park :upside_down_face:

Scientists at MIT have discovered a new class of antibiotics using artificial intelligence, marking the first such discovery in over 60 years. This breakthrough targets methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), a drug-resistant bacterium causing thousands of deaths annually. The AI models were trained using large datasets to predict the activity and toxicity of compounds. After screening millions of compounds, two promising antibiotic candidates were identified and successfully tested in mice, showing significant reduction in MRSA. This innovative approach opens new avenues in fighting antibiotic resistance.

That’s great!
But what happens if AI robots decide to bioengineer a virus to wipe out the human race, and then they can take over! LOL
This is only partly in jest. There is a lot of good coming out of AI. But even Elon Musk (who is generally on the more libertarian side of things) believes that AI needs to become regulated so it doesn’t go off the rails and do something terrible.

Just yesterday, ChatGPT-4 rolled out what’s essentially the equivalent of browser plug-ins. This got me curious, especially after hearing about one app in particular (aimed at finding niche markets). So, I decided to dive in and explore what’s new. There are already over 22,500 apps in the store! These apps are the brainchild of programmers who ingeniously weave ChatGPT-4 into their software to pull off some pretty neat tricks. I’ve got to say, it’s seriously impressive! Here are a couple of apps that really stood out to me and caught my eye:

I recently stumbled upon this video:

It showcases advancements in voice cloning and has become pretty controversial already:

As someone who appreciates George Carlin’s work, I understand both sides.

I have to say I was genuinely impressed by how much the voice in the video resembled his.

It’s not just the voice cloning, though. AI has also made huge strides in creating realistic talking avatars, demonstrated pretty well here (you can even upload a video of you and it will make you into a talking avatar, pretty spot on too I must admit):

And while it may not be as good (I noticed the lips and voice aren’t quite in sync), there’s a website that’s creating a whole news channel featuring purely AI anchors:

https://www.channel1.ai/

This combination of technologies has been on my mind for a while now, especially since I watched this video back in 2021:

I believe that in the future, one of the most crucial jobs will be held by those who can expertly identify highly convincing deepfakes and swiftly address viral misinformation.

It’s truly mind-boggling to consider how rapidly these technologies are evolving. Putting it into perspective with Earth’s 4 billion-year history, the idea of a society that is just a few hundred years more technologically advanced than us really sparks the imagination.

Then my mind goes right to the scale of time that exists within this dimension. Limiting it to billions of years its hard to imagine a society that could be billions of years more technologically advanced than ours. It’s quite comforting to hear theories suggesting that these beings have been quietly observing Earth for thousands of years. This observation makes me lean towards the belief that their intentions aren’t hostile. If they were, I imagine our world would look significantly different from what it is today.

Well my mind wandered off from discussing voice cloning to thinking about the intentions of extraterrestrial beings. I guess that’s just how thoughts flow sometimes, lol.

If ultimately, all we see and hear and do . . . etc., is mind, and there are infinite possibilities in everything, then how can any of this be surprising? I’ve long been expecting some technology to fully reproduce famous and not so famous actors to create movies totally based on computer (AI) generated stories, and be ā€œgood.ā€ AI can generate scripts, create actors, music, scenery. Time to wake up from the dream of expectations, solidity, reification? Was ā€œThe Matrixā€ an ancient prophecy?

maybe… but isn’t this souless art?
If creativity is one of the last bastions of human destinctiveness from souless, unconscious algorithms producing mindless output, shouldn’t we value and celebrate our human creativty even more?

Worth discussing. The results of AI can be stunning and beautiful, consider the many posts on this website. How about photography? It’s the result of a mechanical process where the photographer snaps a photo using a machine, and then the final product development becomes one that involves artificial processes for the final output. Where’s the ā€œsoulā€ in that? Photography with a phone, even harder to find the soul in that. It’s a phone, not a camera.
