I would push back on the purposeless comment about the ocean, or life in general, but it may be a term that was lost in translation and has many meanings like "emptiness’ in Buddhism.
I think the purpose and karmic reasonings are things that only God can understand, or only a Buddha could comprehend pr begin to grasp.
It remind me of the question:
“What is the meaning of life?”
Which by its framing and nature conceptually imprisons whoever answers it with the implication that life has to have a meaning and or that that meaning is comprehendible to those who are not Omniscient…
