@BlessingsDeers. Daniel Amen is brilliant and I agree with 95% of what he says. Alcohol, sugar, junk food, lack of exercise, etc. are all toxins for the brain. And I am excited to learn about the use of saffron for depression. I recommend a lot of natural supplements as alternatives to antidepressants but I hadnât heard about saffron.
My view of cannabis and psilocybin I think is more nuanced than what he presents here. Yes, cannabis is very bad for younger brains or for the brains of people who use it heavily and addictively. It can even trigger psychosis in people with those tendencies. There is cannabis research that confirms that itâs bad for the growing brains of folks under 25, but can actually be good for aging brains, if used moderately and non-addictively.
There are also many medical conditions that cannabis may be helpful for, but more research is needed there as well.
And in terms of psilocyin, there is a sub-set of people who have psychosis that runs in their family that should stay away from it, as it can trigger psychosis. I recently completed a psychedelic therapy training program through Naropa, and we were trained to screen out anyone who has a family history of psychosis. I believe psilocybin should be treated as a powerful and sacred medicine, not a party drug. The Mazatec people who were the original keepers of this medicine, only used it in sacred ceremonial healing settings. That being said, there are some who use it in party settings, that still manage to have unexpected spiritual breakthroughs. âAmazing Grace.â But better to take it with intention in a ceremonial or therapy setting, or at least in a safe, intentional spiritual way. Research shows that itâs very good for depression and probably PTSD as well, for anxiety around death, for nicotine addiction (and probably other addictions as well). Research is demonstrating more and more positive medical and psychogical uses all of the time. Paul Stametz also believes that microdosing it actually good for the brain and increases neuronal growth. Some research has been done on this but more is needed to really prove this. Stametz promotes microdosing (taking a dosage so small that you donât feel high (like the amount of mushroom of about the size of a corn kernel) but he believes it promotes neuronal growth and prevents dementia. He created a combination that he calls âthe Stamets stackâ which combines a microdose of psilocybin (too small to feel high), with Lions Mane mushroom (also promotes growth of brain dendrites) and niacin (which causes a flush, with blood vessels opening in the brain. But again, one personâs medicine is another personâs poison. Proceed with caution and hopefully with inner and outer spiritual guidance.

I feel itâs also important to make experiments and write about them. not so much research but individuals and groups who are brave enough to share their experiences with the world without fear of receiving judgement. each body is a unique piece. What I usually do is remind people of that. Empower them to try new things and see if it works for them.
From my experience what can get in the way of all this is people not willing or motivated to also change some daily habits. Which inspired me to work on my compassion, accept it and keep the path.

He mentions the Sa Ta Na Ma meditation from the kundalini yoga tradition as a way to increase improve brain health. I learned this from one of my energy psychology teachers (he used it as one way to clear trauma - like you would use EMDR or EFT tapping). He had learned it as a member of the Yogi Bhajan kundalini yoga scene back in the 70âs.

I love Mirabai Ceiba and therir version of this song. I hadnât heard it before, so thanks for sharing it! Itâs so beautiful and I was playing with the finger meditation. I say âplayingâ because I just let the fingers do it and let go of control, and they would do the finger tap yoga at different speeds, it would go really fast for a while, then slow for a while, then it started alternating the taps between the left and right hands. It was like my brain was playing and exploring it. I could almost feel the dendrites growing!
This should be taught to our whole aging population!

Wowza wowza, Iâve been experimenting with the Sa Ta Na Ma mantra (while listening to the above music videos) and doing the finger yoga practice at varying speeds or altering the taps between different hands- my hands seemed to be just playing with it on their own!) + doing breathwork! In and out breaths but experimenting with different speeds of breathing in time to the music in the videos. WOW!
If we have any Night Club yogic researchers out there, try this practice and post the results!
My first experience was that it was both calming, centering but also an enlivening of neural pathways. Felt calm and awake with a big inner smile! I could imagine and feel how this could be good for the brain!
Did it with my mother and felt that if there were more people doing it from her age, she would have felt less awkward. Invited my father to join and he freaked out! Too âshanti shantiâ for him.

Did it at the beach to confirm once again that the place where we practice anything makes ALL the difference! Sex included⊠I believe this is the reason why so many people go to Motels - thereâs a whole energy grid supporting the stuff happening.
Back to âSa Ta Na Maâ, at the beach it was a lot more fun!
Gazing the sea while chanting created two different rhythms that would alternate each new time I would repeat the mantra.
After some minutes practicing and playing, I brought my hands together and delighted myself in feeling this energy all over me. Divine, delightful experience.
Got the impression that this is also great good for children.
