My dog Pan died (dedication of merit prayer request)

Hi everyone. I know it’s been a while since I posted. Been dealing with a lot. Depression mostly. Meant to come back here and be active again. This community is important to me. But somehow I just kept putting it off. And for about two months of that I wasn’t even practicing. I’ve gotten back into practicing again recently.

Recently my dog passed away. His name is Pan. He died on Thursday in the evening. I’m pretty sad about that- he was one of the few friends that I have. He was always there for me, even during some very lonely periods of my life. He could always put a smile on my face no matter how rotten I felt. So yeah I’m grieving. He was an important part of my life.

I want to help him as much as a can during this time when he traveling through the bardos. I’ve been dedicating the merits of my practice to him for a while now. I’m practicing tonglen for him now. I’m reading chapter 5 “What to do for yourself after you die” from Preparing to Die for him (I know the Tibetan Book of the Dead is more traditional but it’s hard to understand). I’ve contacted a monastery and inquired about commissioning ceremonies for him to help him to a good rebirth.

I’m wondering if there is something else I could be doing for him. And I also wanted to let you all know in case some of you wanted to practice for him and dedicate your merits to him. If you do I will be very grateful  . This is one of the last things I can do for him, so I want to make sure that I do it to the best of my ability.

Here’s some pictures of him:

Thank you for reading. I’m glad to be part of this community and I mean to make it a more regular part of my life again. Looking forward to reconnecting with all of you. Blessings :green_heart:

Good to have you back my friend, you are a major asset to any community you are a part of! You were missed, and we are very lucky to have you here!

:green_heart:

These losses are so painful and depressing. It is like losing a child or parent or soul mate. Words never do the pain any justice. I am terribly sorry for your loss and will keep Pan and you in my prayers.

I am grateful that you posted this, I dont know much about prayers and rituals that can be done, but I think there are many members here that do know, and I am eager to learn.

Get a journal that is solely dedicated to memories of Pan. And have the first 2 pages be an Index of the memories, and the rest of the journal writing out all your favorite memories of Pan.

Also collect as many pictures and videos of Pan as you can on a flash drive. Might be good to keep an extra copy or 2 of these flash drives, and keep them in different safe locations (in case these is a house fire, or natural disater, God forbid).

You can also create a social media account for Pan, and upload all these pictures and photos there, so they are immortalized Big Tech’s and the governments eternal servers.

Also you may be able to find a really good deal with the Black Friday sales for Digital Picture frames. Upload all the pics and vids to this frame, as well as your other favorite pics of nature and people. This tech is worth its weight in gold, and you can usually buy them for $70-$50 with these holiday sales.

Whether Pan’s soul was shot straight to heaven, or whether it is preparing for a rebirth, I don’t know, but I think either way, your paths will cross again. I believe sometimes our dogs and pets that we love dearly may spend years or decades in heaven, before they make a rebirth, so they can protect, watch over, and help us from the other side.

Sending Pan and you infinite Blessings and Love

Cool synch I just realized, the pooch in my profile pic had almost an identical red coat! It was gifted to her by loved one. I know they appreciate that extra love, especially on the Arctic winter nights.

I like these prayers:

  • Prayer for consolation

“God of all consolation, in your unending Love and Mercy for us, you turn the darkness of death into the dawn of New Life”

Psalm 91:1-7:

"You who dwell in the shelter of the Most High,

who abide in the shade of the Almighty,

Say to the Lord, “My refuge and fortress,

my God in whom I trust.”

He will rescue you from the fowler’s snare,

from the destroying plague,

He will shelter you with his pinions,

and under his wings you may take refuge;

his faithfulness is a protecting shield.

You shall not fear the terror of the night

nor the arrow that flies by day,

Nor the pestilence that roams in darkness,

nor the plague that ravages at noon.

Though a thousand fall at your side,

ten thousand at your right hand,

near you it shall not come."

Thank you so much that’s so generous of you

Thank you for your prayers  . Yes I’ve been feeling pretty depressed since it happened. Keep expecting to see him around the house. It’s been hard going about my usual routine. I did make it to church today though. The sermon was about sadness and weeping. It hit home. I could relate to what was being said in a way I’ve never been to before. There’s so much suffering in the world today.

No worries. I think even prayers from the heart and dedication of merits is powerful. Just wanted to check in and see if there was anything else.

Yes I plan to do this at some point. Not right now though, I need some time to mourn first before I feel ready. The digital photo frame is a lovely idea. Unfortunately I don’t have too many pictures of him. I’m not much of a picture taker.

Thank you  :green_heart:

Anytime my friend, I am very sorry for your loss.

I am very happy to hear this. :green_heart: And the fact that the sermon resonated is no coincidence. I think that was a sign from God and Pan. Grief is so painful, I have found deep power in Communion (Church, Sanghas, sacred texts, teachers, etc), and in Solitude. Too much of 1 or the other can sometimes be detrimental, but finding a balance of the 2 I have found to be deeply healing.

I asked Master Holecek once what is the best prayers we can do for our loved ones, and his reply was:
“LOVE them”

Whether alive or passed on or in a bardo, I believe this Heart to Heart connection is felt, even if for some its only on an unconscious level.

Visualizing the loved one, and feeling deep love towards them, I think is one of the most powerful ‘prayers’ we can do.

Master Holecek has also at least once referred to his dog as a Tulku (kinda jokingly, but maybe NOT ) He has also said that highly evolved beings can split their souls/consciousness, and reincarnate in multiple beings at the same time (or even a million beings). Following this logic, Pan may have already been an enlightened soul that became a dog to help the most people possible. So its probable that part of the soul stayed in Heaven and other parts of it are in the trees, the mountains, and the stars.

Jang Chok: Ancient Bon Ritual For Guiding the Consciousness of the Deceased Paperback – January 1, 2023

by Tempa Dukte Lama (Author)

“The Jang Chok ritual from the Du Tri Su cycle is a powerful skillful means to guide the consciousness of the deceased and protect it from the terror of the Bardo experiences. The Bardo is the in-between state where the consciousness has left the physical body at the moment of death and has not yet taken on a new body. Through the power of the ritual and the absorption of the practitioner, the ritual closes the doors of rebirth of the six realms of cyclic existence and protects the consciousness from wandering. The ritual offers the soul guidance for traversing the Ten Stages of Compassionate Beings and the Three Unsurpassable Spheres through which the Three Bodies of the Awakened One are attained. This book offers the first complete English translation and transliteration of the Du Tri Su Jang Chok liturgy (with the original Tibetan included). In the first part of the book, Tempa Dukte Lama explains the different sections of the ritual and their meaning and purpose as well as how to make the required torma offerings and prepare for the ritual. The liturgy in the second part of the book is annotated throughout and images of ritual arrangements and torma offerings are included to assist practitioners in performing the ritual.”

@Bucket
I asked my Teacher today what rituals he would recommend for Pan, he said he did not know off the top of his head, but recomended this book. I have not read it, but looks very good.

I wrote an email to a temple, asking for helpful prayers. I will let you know what they say when they reply.

We say these 2 prayers in our Sangha every week, usually as 1. This week, for the first time, our Teacher said the last 4 lines of the second Prayer are often repeated 3 or more times, because they are so important. I think these prayers are very Powerful, and hope they resonate with you and Pan

Yes I’ve been trying to do this. I hope it’s been comforting and helpful. I’ve also been doing tonglen for him. Trying to focus more on the love than the sorrow.

Oh thank you for reaching out like that! This practice looks very helpful, I hadn’t heard of it before. The monastery I contacted doesn’t list this as one of the practices they offer, not even sure if there are any Bon practioners there. Maybe I could ask though…

Prayers would be helpful thanks  Anyone can help though I don’t think you need to be a monastic or part of temple. That’s why I started this thread. Just to let you all know that if you wanted to dedicate your meditation or other practices to someone in need who is traversing the bardos, my dog is in need right now. I’m thinking about maybe starting a thread for requests of this kind. I don’t know if people would find that helpful or not.

=========================================================================

I commissioned Dedication of Merit and Shitro prayers for Pan at a monastery in Washington. They’re currently looking into whether there would be a lama available for Sur prayers too. I’m grateful that there are dharma siblings looking out for Pan and helping him on his journey.

I wish I would have taken the time to set all this up beforehand, but it is what it is.

The Meditation Practice of Ma Tri
Om Ma Tri Mu Ye Sa Le Du
Assume the fivefold posture and let your body settle into the posture. Feel relaxed and at ease. Let your
mind settle into the firmness of your posture.
Once you feel settled, visualize a white luminous
syllable Om in the space in front of you above the crown of
your head. The Om rests on a sun and moon disc seated on a
lotus blossom. From the Om, rays of light in the five colors
white, blue, green, red, and yellow radiate outward into all
directions, filling the space around you and everywhere.
Imagine that the light reaches all beings and the Buddhas and
compassionate beings of the ten directions. Then it is reflected
back to you and touches your heart. As the light touches you,
imagine that you are purified of all afflictions and karmic
traces. Being purified, your body transforms into a body of
light.
Now gently bring your attention to the syllable Om in
front of you. Visualize that the Om slowly transforms into
white light. The light transforms into the Buddha of
Compassion, Shenlha Odkar in front of you above the crown of
your head. He is radiant white in color and has one face and
two hands. He is seated in the meditation posture. His hands
in his lap hold the wish-fulfilling jewel. He is adorned with the
thirteen ornaments of peacefulness, including golden necklaces, anklets, and wristlets.
Visualize that Shenlha Odkar transforms into light that enters your body through the crown of
your head. The moment the light touches your head, you transform into Shenlha Odkar. Stay in that
2
state of being Shenlha Odkar, the Buddha of compassion and wisdom.
When you are ready visualize a radiant white syllable Om in your heart center. Visualize the Om as
vividly as possible. The Om is surrounded by the mantra Om Ma Tri Mu Ye Sa Le Du written in clockwise
direction. The syllables gently rotate in an anti-clockwise direction. Visualize radiant rays of white light
radiating outward from the mantra’s syllables. The light touches all Buddhas and compassionate beings.
Then it is reflected back by them and returns to you. Once it touches your heart, feel that you receive
the blessings of all the Buddhas and compassionate beings of the ten directions.
Now visualize bright rays of white light radiating outward from the mantra in your heart, touching
all beings throughout space and time. Send your love and compassion through the rays of light, making
the wish that all beings be free from pain and suffering. The moment the beings are touched by the
light, they become Buddhas, free from all suffering and affliction. Stay in this state of contemplation and
recite the mantra Om Ma Tri Mu Ye Sa Le Du at least seven, twenty-one, or hundred and eight times for
one session.
For the dissolution, visualize that all the wisdom beings slowly dissolve into space like a rainbow
that dissolves. Visualize that all the symbolic beings of your visualization gently dissolve into you. Then
visualize that you yourself dissolve into light. Let the light gently transform into a radiant white syllable
Om. Slowly, the Om transforms into a luminous white A. Be with the A for a while. Now let the A
dissolve into space. Stay in that state of the contemplation of clarity and emptiness.
The Meditation Practice of Du Tri Su
A Kar A Med Du Tri Su Nagpo Zhi Zhi Mal Mal So Ha
For the generation stage, assume the fivefold posture and let your body settle. Feel relaxed and at
ease. Let your mind settle into the firmness of your posture.
We begin the practice of Du Tri Su by taking refuge
in the Buddhas and deities of the teaching cycle of Du Tri
Su: The primordial Buddha Kuntu Zangpo, the Four
Transcendent Buddhas, the six Buddhas Dulwa Shendrug,
the thirteen deities of wisdom and the Guardians of the
Four Directions. Then we generate the heart and mind of
compassion toward all beings of the three realms: the
desire realm, form realm, and formless realm.
When you feel settled into the heart and mind of
compassion, visualize yourself slowly transforming into
the compassionate Buddha Tonpa Shenrab, the
embodiment of knowledge and discriminating
awareness. His body color is radiant golden. In his right
hand he holds the Yungdrung Chag Shing. This double
Yungdrung (Swastika) and the bar that connects the two
Yungdrungs represents the threefold path of liberation of
the Bon: The Sutra, Tantra, and Dzogchen. His left hand
rests on his lap in the meditation gesture. He is adorned
with the thirteen ornaments of peacefulness. He is seated on a throne supported by the dharma wheel.
3
On his right shoulder abides the Buddha Shenlha Odkar and on his left shoulder abides the Buddha
Sangpo Bhumtri. Above the crown of his head is the loving mother of compassion Satrig Ersang. He is
surrounded by the Buddhas and deities of the Du Tri Su teachings, including the six compassionate
Buddhas Dulwa Shendrug, the thirteen deities of wisdom Ye Shen Chusum, and the Guardians of the Four
Directions.
In his heart center is a radiant white syllable Om. Bring your attention to the Om. Do your best to
make the visualization as clear as possible so that your heart and mind unify with the Om and you
become one with it. Then visualize that the syllable Om gently dissolves into luminous white light. The
light slowly transforms into the primordial Buddha Kuntu Zangpo. He is the size of a thumb and is seated
in your heart center. The mantra A Kar A Med Du Tri Su Nagpo Zhi Zhi Mal Mal So Ha is written in a
clockwise circle around him. Rays of light emanate from him and touch the mantra. As they touch the
mantra, it begins to rotate slowly in a counterclockwise direction.
Now visualize that infinite rays of light radiate outward from the mantra and touch all beings
throughout space. As they touch each being, they clear any karmic conditioning and obstacles through
the power of the mantra and the blessings. Then the light rays return to you. Visualize that they clear
your karmic conditioning. Once the karmic conditioning is cleared, the five wisdoms manifest
spontaneously in you and all beings.
Visualize that all beings living in the earth, water, fire, air and space benefit from this practice.
Remain in this state of contemplation. From the state of being unified with the mantra, open yourself to
perceiving all form as the Buddhas of the three times, all sounds as the sound of the Du Tri Su mantra,
and all thoughts and feelings as the heart and mind of the primordial Buddha Kuntu Zangpo. Once you
feel settled into this realization, recite the mantra at least 7, 21, or 108 times for one session.
For the dissolution, visualize that all the symbolic beings slowly dissolve into space. Then visualize that
all the wisdom beings gently dissolve into you. Finally, visualize yourself dissolving into a luminous white
syllable A. Then the A dissolves into space. Remain in this state of contemplation, leaving everything as it
is without grasping.
The Meditation Practice of Sa Le Od
A Om Hung
Ah A Kar Sa Le Od A Yang Om Du
For the generation stage, assume the fivefold posture and let
your body settle. Feel relaxed and at ease. Let your mind settle into
the firmness of your posture.
When you are ready, visualize yourself as the primordial
Buddha Kuntu Zangpo in the form of Kunzang Akor. Kunzang Akor is
seated in meditation posture on a sun and moon disk in the infinite
space in front of you. His body is white in color. He has one face and
two hands. In his right hand he holds the Yungdrung (Swastika) in
front of his heart; in the left hand he holds the vase of longevity. At
his heart center is a radiant luminous white syllable A surrounded by the mantra Ah A Kar Sa Le Od A
Yang Om Du. The Mantra is written in clockwise direction and gently rotates counter-clockwise.
4
Visualize that radiant rays of light emanate from the syllable A and from the mantra. They touch
the hearts of all Buddhas of the ten directions and the 3,000 worlds and dissolve into them. Feel the
light rays expand and become more powerful as they touch the Buddhas. Then visualize that the light
rays return from the Buddhas and dissolve into your entire body. Imagine that you receive the strength
and all the awakened qualities and blessings of the Buddhas. Remain in this state of contemplation of
being filled with blessings.
When you are ready, visualize that radiant rays of light emanate from your heart center. This time
they touch all beings throughout space and dissolve into their hearts. Imagine that the light rays clear
the karmic traces and obscurations of all beings. When the light returns back to you, imagine that your
own karmic traces and obscurations are cleared. Remain in this state of contemplation, having purified all
karmic obscurations of yourself and others.
Now imagine that radiant rays of light emanate from your heart center and touch the obstacles
experienced by all beings and the sources of provocation of energy. Wherever you bring your attention,
all karmic obscurations and obstacles are cleared, and any harmful intentions and ill thoughts are pacified.
Having pacified the harmful intentions and ill thinking of all beings, imagine that all suffering and
pain is released and cleared. Abide in this state of happiness and joy. Then visualize that the light rays
return to you. As the light rays touch you, any imbalances or weaknesses in your life force energy,
strength and prosperity are released and leave your body, dissolving into the seat below you.
Remain in this state of contemplation, feeling that all imbalances in your life force energy,
strength and prosperity are cleared. From this state of contemplation recite the mantra Ah A Kar Sa Le
Od A Yang Om Du at least seven, twenty-one, or hundred and eight times for one session.
Finally, visualize that all the symbolic beings that you have created through your visualization
dissolve into space. All the wisdom beings expand into bright light and finally dissolve into your heart. Once
they have dissolved into you fully, imagine that you transform into a rainbow and dissolve into space.
Remain in this state of contemplation of the unification of clarity and emptiness without grasping, just
leaving everything as it is. Once you are ready, dedicate the merit of the practice to the benefit of all
beings.

Beloved Bucket,

I just recorded an audio with this dedication of merit (that I learned in the Pure Lands Pilgrimage I did with AH this year) that you might feel resonance with, and also sing it, dedicating it especially to Pan. I did it dedicated to Pan:

Resonate SO MUCH with this.

Beloved @Bucket I would make a lucid dream plan to meet Pan in dreams  I have done this with my son and… it was AMAZING! It soothed my heart deeply :dolphin:

Also, @NightHawk999 , @Kalabasis and I co-created a song together… check it out… might resonate with your heart and feel the boundless love connecting you both.
Just shared it at the artist’s corner: ✂️ Creator's Corner - #20 by BlessingsDeers

I do agree with @NightHawk999 that it could be that you meet Pan again. There’s a really cool movie about this:

I also agree with @NightHawk999 that you are a great asset to any group you might engage with. So great to have you here.

Thank you for sharing that music. Both pieces were beautiful. One like a lullaby, another plainchant. Thank you for reminding me about the love that connects us. I have had a hard time lately with obsessing over his last days and how I could be better.

I did think about doing this, but wasn’t sure whether I’d have a dream before the 49 days are done, as I haven’t been practicing lately. With the spontaneous lucid dream last night though I think I will give it a try. I’ll write up my lucid dream plan today.

I do too. I think me might be part of my soul pod. I remember when he entered one of my dreams and comforted me after a nightmare. He was looking out for me even in my dreams.

Thank you

Do Not Stand at My Grave and Weep

By Mary Elizabeth Frye

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.

One of my all time favorite poems.

:green_heart:
